If the family you want to support observes being kosher, don’t be intimidated and not send in anything because you’re not sure what to do. It’s easy when you understand basic guidelines and there are plenty of kosher restaurants, caterers and supermarkets to order meals from. Here is a rundown of the things you need to know.
For a Kosher Family:
- Pork and shellfish (eg. shrimp, crab) are forbidden. However, fish is allowed (e.g. salmon, tilapia)
- Meat and chicken must be slaughtered in a kosher way. Kosher meat can be found in kosher sections of grocery stores and kosher butchers.
- Meat and dairy is not allowed to be consumed together in the same meal. For example, lasagna with ground beef and cheese isn’t allowed, however, an all cheese lasagna is. Fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables and grains can be eaten with either meat or dairy.
- There are various levels of ‘kosher’ that Jewish people observe. If you know that the house you will be visiting is at any level of observing the kosher laws, be on the safe side and don’t bring anything homemade. Instead, purchase something from a kosher store or a store that sells kosher goods. A kosher deli, bakery, or caterer will always work.
- Many pre-packaged foods are labeled kosher. Look for COR, K, U and other kosher symbols on packaging.
