The other day I received the best compliment from a customer. She told me that I am the Chief Happiness Officer at our Starbucks store. Wow!
Since I started my part-time gig as a barista I’ve definitely had moments when I questioned myself, or to be more accurate – I worried about what other people who know me would think about me now serving coffee when I used to run coffee businesses.
While I do lots of other jobs in my “portfolio career” – consulting, volunteer, speaking engagements, board work, I still would find myself worrying at times if working as a barista made it look to others like I failed.
Then I get a compliment like I did this morning – and I realize that my happiness is clearly shining through at work. I absolutely love being a barista – getting to know my customers, working with all the young co-workers, the music blaring, the aroma of fresh beans grinding and the overall vibe when I’m at work. It’s literally the best way to start my day as I jump out of bed at 4:15am during the week.
At this stage of my life I am being totally uncompromising regarding doing what makes me happy. There, I said it. Embracing it with all my being.
Do what makes your heart sing!
